Terms of use
Last updated:
Bistory is a free bilingual reader for public-domain books, run by an individual developer. By using the app or this website you agree to these terms.
The service
Bistory is provided free of charge and without an account. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of it at any time. We may introduce optional paid features in the future; if we do, we will say so clearly before you pay for anything.
Content
The original texts are in the public domain. For each edition we check its copyright status country by country, and we hide editions that are not in the public domain where you are. Where no public-domain translation exists, the translation was produced by this project with the help of large language models and then revised. Word notes, dictionaries, summaries and cover art are produced by the project. All narration is generated by AI and is labelled as such.
We may remove or restrict content at any time, for example when a rights concern is raised.
Accuracy
Translations, word notes and AI narration can contain mistakes. They are offered as reading and learning aids, not as authoritative translations, and must not be relied on where accuracy matters. If you find an error, please use the report feature in the app.
Permitted use
You may use Bistory for personal, non-commercial reading and learning. The public-domain texts remain free for everyone to use. Translations, word notes, summaries, cover art and audio produced by the project may be used for your personal purposes; you may not redistribute, sell, bulk-download or scrape them, or use them to train machine-learning models, without our written permission.
Acceptable use
Do not overload or abuse the sync API or the content servers, circumvent regional availability, or submit reports that contain unlawful or abusive content or personal information about other people.
Your sync code
The sync code is the only key to your synced data. Keep it private. Anyone who has it controls that data, and we cannot recover or reset it.
Reports and feedback
By sending an error report or other feedback you allow us to use it to improve the content and the service, without compensation and without any obligation to act on it.
Third-party services
Bistory relies on Cloudflare for hosting and on Google Fonts in the web app. Where the app is distributed through an app store, that store’s terms also apply to your download.
No warranty and limitation of liability
Bistory is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the service, including loss of synced data. Nothing in these terms limits rights that consumer law in your country grants you and that cannot be waived.
Changes and termination
We may update these terms; the current version is always published here with its date. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms. We may stop serving anyone who breaches these terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the place where the operator resides, unless mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence provides otherwise.
